Champion Your Health This May: Small Steps Toward Stronger, More Independent Living

Older Americans Month’s theme—

“Champion Your Health”—is a reminder that everyday choices can support long-term wellbeing.

May is Older Americans Month, and this year’s theme —Champion Your Health—encourages older adults to take an active role in managing their health through preventive care, informed decisions, and habits that support long-term independence.

As a healthy aging consultant with Silver Linings Consulting LLC, I love this message because it’s empowering: you don’t have to overhaul your life to make meaningful progress. You can start with small, realistic steps that build confidence, energy, and resilience—one choice at a time.

What it means to “Champion Your Health”

Championing your health doesn’t mean doing everything perfectly. It means staying engaged with your wellbeing and making choices that help you feel your best—physically, mentally, and socially.

Here are a few pillars that matter at every age:

1) Stay on top of preventive care

Preventive care helps you catch concerns early and protect your independence long-term. Consider using May as a check-in month:

- Schedule annual wellness visits and recommended screenings

- Review medications and supplements with your provider or pharmacist

- Ask about vaccines that may be appropriate for you

- Write down questions before appointments so you feel prepared and heard

If healthcare feels overwhelming, bring a trusted friend or family member to appointments, or keep a simple notebook with dates, results, and next steps.

2) Make informed decisions—one at a time

Health information is everywhere, and it can be hard to know what applies to you. A helpful approach is to focus on one goal at a time and ask:

- What’s realistic for me right now?

- What support would make this easier?

- What’s one small step I can take this week?

Small steps add up—and they’re more likely to stick.

3) Build habits that support independence

Independence is supported by everyday habits: movement, nutrition, sleep, hydration, stress management, and social connection. You don’t need intense workouts or complicated routines. In fact, gentle, consistent movement is one of the best tools we have for supporting mobility, balance, mood, and confidence.

A local way to champion your health:

Silver Linings Wellness Walks

If you’re in Hancock County (or nearby) and you’re looking for a supportive way to move more, I invite you to join Silver Linings Wellness Walks.

These are gentle, welcoming community walks where we explore different sections of the Pennsy Trail together. The goal isn’t speed or distance—it’s building comfort and confidence using local trails, while supporting wellbeing through:

- Gentle movement that supports joints, circulation, and stamina

- Social connection (because health is more than physical)

- Time in nature, which can support mental wellbeing and stress reduction

- Sunlight/Vitamin D exposure (as appropriate and safely)

- A sense of community—seeing familiar faces and feeling encouraged

Many people want to walk more but don’t feel comfortable going alone, aren’t sure where to start, or worry they’ll “slow others down.” Wellness Walks are designed to be approachable. We’re building a community where people can show up as they are and take a step forward—literally and figuratively.

Your “Champion Your Health” checklist:

If you want a quick way to put this theme into action, try this:

- Pick one preventive care item to schedule this month

- Add two short walks per week (even 10–15 minutes counts)

- Choose one habit that supports energy (hydration, earlier bedtime, more protein, etc.)

- Reach out to one person for connection (a call, coffee, or a walk)
